The village of Bamfield covers both sides of the inlet. Several public docks are located on each side of the inlet. Commercial fish boats have priority, but space usually can be found for pleasure craft. A quiet basin for anchorage is found at the head of the inlet just past Rance Island.

The general store is on the west side of the inlet. The east side has roads that tie its businesses and homes together. They connect with 6 mil-long dirt logging road that leads to Port Alberni. The east side of town has a pub, a small convenience store with deli counter and small cafe, motels, and fuel dock. Water is at the fuel dock only. The trail to Cape Beale begins on the east side of the inlet.
Wireless internet is available by purchasing a password at the general store.
The large building near the entrance and located on the east side of the inlet houses the Bamfield Marine Research Station. The station is owned by five universities in British Columbia and Alberta. Visitors are welcomed and free tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer. The facility was one time the eastern terminus of the transpacific cable that connected North America and Australia. Its first message was sent on November 1, 1902. The last message sent was in 1959.
