Posting 5 - Thursday,
June 18, 2009 Today
we left Ketchikan after 7 nights in a marina.
We visited Misty Fjords and one day and spent a couple of days
fishing. We also spent a day going
through Totem Bight (federal forest with totem poles) and of course we spent some
time going through the stores in the tourist section of town. We stayed at Bar Harbor North so we had easy
access to the laundry mat and Safeway grocery store but we were about 1.5 miles
from downtown. We became very familiar
with the bus system in town and took advantage of it many times and met some
really “colorful” people. The
first day we arrived in Ketchikan the sun was shining and it was a lovely
day. I noticed many motorcycles on the
road and they were all Harley Davidson and no one was wearing a helmet. I also noticed how many people were smoking
and the restaurants still had smoking /non-smoking sections. We actually walked out of a couple of places
because of the smoke. Even
though there were 4 to 5 cruise ships in town every day Ketchikan didn’t seem
very crowded. There seemed to be a
jewelry story every ten feet but no customers in sight and I think everyone has
caught on to the ticky-tacky souvenir shops and they weren’t even doing much
business. Since the logging has stopped
and fishing is down, Ketchikan has only the tourists to help build the economy
and the town is looking very depressed. We left today heading towards Meyers Chuck, which is a funny little place. There are a many small cabins here and even a post office and a government dock but nothing else. The dock was full when we arrived so we are at anchor and it is a nice change after being at the dock in Ketchikan. It is really lovely and it is raining and we are in the boat with our heater on (cozy).
Friday,
June 19, 2009 Happy Birthday Bob. Number 64! On to Wrangell. It rained off and on with some
sun today. The water was like glass so
the trip was extremely smooth. Tracie
even baked Bob a cake for his birthday while we were under way. We didn’t get in until 4:45 and by the time
we got docked and put together the town had rolled up the streets. We will go out tomorrow and check things out.
