Annual Donation keeps Plover in Ship Shape SYC has always been a proud sponsor of the historic Plover ferry and 2010 is no different. On August 7, Commodore David Bailey and Vice Commodore Chris Backus were happy to present Plover Captain Richard Sturgill with a check for $750. Built in 1944, the Plover ferry is, in the words of Captain Sturgill, “vulnerable and in need of attention which these funds can provide.” Earlier in the season the crew discovered a problem in the plywood around the aft port side window of the passenger’s cabin. The funds from this donation from the SYC will be used to make this repair. The fiberglass that covers the plywood must be removed and the marine plywood around the window replaced. Part of the window will also be replaced and then fiberglass will be applied to the plywood. Last year’s donation from SYC, in the same amount, was used to purchase and install a much-needed passenger cabin heater, Captain Sturgill tells us. “Drayton Harbor Maritime is lucky to receive this donation for the ferry,” he says. “The Semiahmoo Yacht Club’s continuing financial support helps to assure that the venerable Historic Plover is kept in good running order so it can continue be an active part of our maritime heritage. On behalf of Drayton Harbor Maritime I would like to say thank you Semiahmoo Yacht Club very much!” ![]() Also pictured are Rear Commodore Susan Barlock, far left, and Vice Commodore Chris Backus, far right. |

The following is a recap of the amounts we have been able to donate so far from recycling for the Scouts: 2006 $374.65; 2007 $281.90; 2008 $252.05. (Other monies have been donated in the past from raffles.) There are monthly Ship's Committee Meetings and we have our own Geoff Stevenson to represent our Yacht Club. Please thank Geoff for 'stepping aboard' to give a voice (and his knowledge of sailing and boats) to our Club. Without a doubt, boat maintenance is the Sea Scouts single largest expense. The Scouts have some fairly significant expenses coming up in the near future when they haul out the Charee(around $2,000), and moorage for the
