Reciprocal Moorage at the Bellingham Yacht Club

ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS

Plan your course so as to arrive around the west end of the breakwater; a green buoy about 100′ out off the end, and a red buoy on the breakwater’s end will help you; there is also a pair of range marks on the shore to guide you in.

Turn to starboard around the rock breakwater, you will pass fish houses and a frozen food facility to port, with a large “ICE” sign atop them. Continue around to port, past the Gate 1 Fuel Dock. Continue back toward shore.

As you near the shore, you will see the BYC dock parallel to the shore and directly in front of the BYC Clubhouse building (Club rooms are on the lower floor, with the restaurant above). Take any available slip not marked “reserved”. Keep your boat close to any boat ahead of, or behind it, to allow maximum use of the dock by all desirous of doing so.

FACILITIES AND AMENITIES:

The BYC offers visitors from reciprocal Yacht Clubs use of the BYC dock; the Club’s restrooms and showers; and participation in the Club’s Friday’s @ Five program.

The dock is over 200 feet long (of which about 100ft is available to visitors from reciprocating clubs), new in 1997, constructed of the most modern materials. It includes numerous 30 and 20-amp outlets for 100-volts AC. The restroom and showers are accessible in the Club building when the Club is attended (BYC is an all volunteer club and is not continually manned), or by special arrangement with the Club’s Dockmaster or any other officer. Dock carts are at the head of the dock, as are Port of Bellingham-operated rest rooms, shower rooms, and a laundry. There is an ice machine near the dock; also nearby are numerous engine, electric, electronic, canvas, hydraulic, haul-out, and fuel facilities and services. Two chandleries are nearby as are several restaurants from casual to luxurious. Public phones are at the head of the dock, as is a weather radio receiver. Bellingham is a U.S. Customs check in port; the numbers are posted at the ramp’s head. A portable holding tank pump cart is in an enclosure right next to the BYC dock. An oil dump tank is about 300 feet away for waste oil disposal.

Friday’s @ Five is a BYC social program held in the Clubhouse on the first and third Friday of each month. It is a social hour with refreshments, appetizers, and occasionally a short, informal program. Dress is casual. During the summer the club bar is normally open from 5.00 pm to 10.00 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Reciprocal visitors are welcome. Contact a Club officer to confirm that it is scheduled.

DOCK RULES AND REGULATIONS:

The BYC Dock is available to reciprocal club members on a first-come, first serve basis; about 100 feet is available for reciprocal guest use. Low water depth is over seven feet, and the largest boat accommodated by the fairway’s turning channel to the dock is about 65 feet. The first night’s moorage is free; thereafter, the moorage is 50 cents/foot/night. Power on the dock is $3.00 per day for each day used. Moorage is limited to three days except by special arrangement. The dock is a side-tie, parallel dock. Users should tie up as close as possible to the boat(s) in front and behind to maximize the number of boats served. BYC reserves the right to adjust dock lines and/or refuse or grant moorage at it’s sole discretion on this dock to offer the most boats moorage, and to facilitate Club use of the dock for any purpose.

NOTE: DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS, PARTICULARLY JULY AND AUGUST THE DOCK FILLS EARLY. BYC DOES NOT GUARANTEE MOORAGE. IF BYC MOORAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE TRY THE ADJACENT PUBLIC DOCK (CHARGES 50 CENTS/FT/NIGHT).

Upon arrival boaters should collect a BYC registration form/envelope from the small wooden box at the east end of the dock. The information should be completed, and the envelope stub should be posted on a window of the vessel clearly visible from the dock. Prior to departure the envelope containing cash or check should be deposited in the BYC box on the Club (basement) doorway. If the skipper’s club does not have reciprocal privileges, the skipper will be asked to move the boat from the BYC dock.

Visitors are required to: (A) Return dock carts promptly after use; (B) Honor the “no sewage discharge” policy of the Port of Bellingham and USCG; (C) Take all garbage to the dumpsters located across from BYC Club house; (D) Do no cooking and/or have no fires on the docks themselves; (E) Keep lines and cords coiled and stowed so as to minimize their hazard; (E) Display the BYC registration-envelope stub in the boats window dockside; and (F) Fly their club’s burgee.

Reciprocal Slip Procedures

Upon entering the EAST entrance of Squalicum Harbor in Bellingham Bay, proceed past the Marina Restaurant (on your starboard side). Your bow will be pointed at "O" dock which is visitor's moorage. Temporarily tie-up to that float. A sign (blue star on the map) is located at the west end of this dock that will direct you to CYC's reciprocity slips and provide you with instructions on how to utilize our reciprocal spaces. Boats up to 38 feet overall can be accommodated on a space available, first come basis for one night only. After one night you are required by the Port of Bellingham to utilize the visitor's dock. Please keep in mind that these slips are made available by their owners who are out cruising at this time.

Directions for the Use of Reciprocal Slips

1. Refer to the map to locate the CYC reciprocal slips (in the blue box) which are as follows:

up to 32 feet overall--

  • M west 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 56, 57, 58

33-38 feet over all--

  • N west 34, 36, 37, 38, 42, 44, 45, 46
  • 2. Walk and follow the map to locate the reciprocal slips and to determine which ones may be available at this time.
  • 3. Look for a sign towards the entrance to the slip that notes whether the particular slip is available at this time. If there is no sign and no boat, assume that the slip is NOT available.

    4. In the box attached to the dock box at the reciprocal slips you will find a binder with a sheet on the cover that indicates the owner's name and the date and time on which the owner will be returning. You may use the slip for one night if the slip is empty and the stated date is no sooner than tomorrow's date.

    5. In the binder, you will find a registration form that you must fill out. Place the top half of the registration in the folder in the back of the binder (A donation to reimburse the owner for use of their electricity would also be appreciated).

    6. At this point, move your boat into the slip and after securing it, walk up to the Bayside Restaurant (see map in binder) to deposit the bottom half of the registration in the Port of Bellingham's visitor registration box.

    7. Someone must be on the vessel overnight and if you leave the vessel, please leave a note as to where you may be reached in an emergency (i.e, the restaurant at which you are eating).

    8. You will need to vacate the slip prior to the owner's stated return.

These reciprocal slips are being made available to you by CYC of Bellingham members through the cooperation of the Port of Bellingham. It is therefore, important that you respect the rules for usage of these slips or they may be lost to you and others forever. You are responsible for your actions and must take responsibility for damage caused to the Port's facilities, other boats and/or people by those actions. In using these facilities, you agree to hold harmless the Port of Bellingham and Corinthian Yacht Club of Bellingham for damages caused by yours or an other boater's actions.

Cruising WG (Whiskey Golf) in the Georgia Strait - Schooner Cove
    by Greger McLean

Easy access to Schooner Cove from the South is to pass seaward of Winchelsea Island in the safe transit lane then head directly into the Schooner Cove Marina. Call the helpful duty officer at Winchelsea Control on VHF channel 10, or Schooner Cove Marina on VHF channel 73 if you have any questions.

Situated just east of Fairwinds Schooner Cove Resort on the east side of mid-Vancouver Island, British Columbia is an area in the Strait of Georgia known to mariners as WG or Whiskey Golf. This area is used 12 months of the year by the Canadian and United States navy to conduct experiments on non-explosive torpedoes. It is also used for training their ships and aircrews in locating and attacking submarines. The 400m soft flat bottom of the Georgia Strait make this an ideal location for testing and retrieving the torpedoes.

North Winchelsea Island houses the control centre for the area. From this vantage point, the safety officer can monitor the movements of all vessels in or near the WG area. It is easy for mariners to access Schooner Cove or Nanoose Bay by using the safe transit lane established 1,000 yds Northeast of the Winchelsea Island group and 1,000 yds east of the Ballenas Island group.

When approaching Schooner Cove resort from the southeast, the easiest access is to pass seaward of Winchelsea Island in the safe transit lane then head directly into the Schooner Cove Marina. When operations are being conducted in the area, the area is "active". Vessels may sometimes transit the area when it is active by obtaining permission from the control centre on Winchelsea Island. Radio or phone communications are the key. "Winchelsea Island Control" may be contacted on marine VHF radio channel 10 or 16 or by calling toll free 1-888-221-1011. Active times may be obtained through the toll free number or by listening to the marine VHF channels 21B or weather 3. The location of the WG area can be found on charts numbered 3512 and 3459. The Canadian Coast Guard also describes it in the publication "Notices to Mariners - Annual edition".

North Winchelsea Island may be approached from all directions however landing on the shore or at the dock on the West side is not permitted. Pay attention to the Rock hazard marked on your chart when approaching from the west.

South Winchelsea Island is owned by the Land Conservancy of BC (TLC). The society rents a house on the ecologically diverse island to groups and individuals. TLC enjoys a good relationship with their Navy neighbors on north Winchelsea Island. Their combined effort helps monitor the islands visitors and traffic. Pay attention to the rudder rock hazard marked on your chart east of south Winchelsea Island. For information on south Winchelsea Island call the TLC in Victoria at (250) 361-7693 or visit their website.

With the destaffing of the light house at Ballenas Island and the closest Coast Guard stations being located at French Creek and Nanaimo it is comforting to know that the navy is close by. With their modern equipment, vessels and helicopter at Nanoose Bay and Winchelsea Island they can respond to an emergency near Schooner Cove in minutes. The Navy responds to approximately 12 marine rescues per year in the Georgia Strait.

For Information about the Fairwinds Schooner Cove Marina and Resort call toll free 1-800-663-7060,  VHF radio channel 73,  e-mail Fairwinds or visit their website.
